The Selene 60 Ocean Explorer: timeless elegance and exceptional performance for the return of Selene Yachts to the United States
Selene Yachts recently unveiled its latest addition, the 60 Ocean Explorer, in the United States. This luxury trawler combines contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship to offer a unique sailing experience.
Innovative design for comfort

The Selene 60 Ocean Explorer is the smallest vessel in the shipyard's Ocean Explorer range. It shares a hull and certain features with the 60 Classic, but stands out for its elegant, modern design. The clean lines of the hull, combined with the harmonious curves of the superstructure, give it a look that is both sporty and refined. This model features large windows in the superstructure, a raised wheelhouse with an aft sloping front window, a Portuguese deck, and pronounced horizontal detailing just below the flybridge.
According to Passagemaker editor Jeff MOSER, Howard Chen, CEO of Selene Yachts and naval architect, ‘Selene's design starts with a bow that has a very distinctive bulbous shape. It's actually like an egg shape. There's a hard chine at the stern that blends into the round hull amidships. We have a cruiser stern, which gives the boat a longer waterline, and a propeller well, which reduces the angle of the propeller shaft and the draft.’
Inside, the spaces are vast and bright, offering unrivalled comfort. The noble materials used, such as wood and leather, create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Exceptional performance
The 60 Ocean Explorer is equipped with a powerful, economical engine, enabling it to tackle long crossings at speeds of up to 92 feet, while offering smooth, silent sailing. The hull has been specially designed to reduce fuel consumption and offer great stability at sea. What's more, the optional electric propulsion system makes it possible to sail with complete peace of mind in protected areas.
Howard Chen says ‘All the navigation equipment is protected. These elements combine to offer good performance, less pitching, very stable sailing and even slightly higher speed than other traditional displacement hulls.’ (comments relayed by Jeff MOSER).
A customised layout

Selene Yachts offers a highly personalised interior layout with three luxury cabins and three, or two, bathrooms. The aim is to meet the needs and desires of every owner. Whether you want a convivial living space or an office on board, the possibilities are endless.
A responsible choice
The Selene 60 Ocean Explorer is a boat designed with respect for the environment. The materials used are selected for their durability and low ecological impact. What's more, the almost 2 kW solar panel installed on its hard-top means that it can run exclusively on solar energy for a large part of the summer.

Impressive turnout at a rally in Washington State - Testimonials from Selene trawler owners
A unique gathering was organised in Roche Harbor, Washington, to mark the 25th anniversary of the brand and its return to the United States. More than three dozen Selene models were present, along with an armada of trawler owners. Jeff MOSER was present at this exceptional event, where the 60 Ocean Explorer - the first new Selene to be launched in North America for several years - was the star of the gathering. He was able to gather several experiences from owners more than satisfied with their boats, which they are proud to represent at such an event. Here are just a few of them:
On a Marsha and Daniel Gallagher, commercial fishermen in South East Alaska and owners of the ‘Resolution’, a Selene 53, were among the many couples who said that a simple visit had convinced them to choose this brand. The Gallaghers simply saw a Selene in Sitka. After being invited aboard for dinner, they fell in love with the layout and build quality. They found the Resolution and quickly struck a deal.
He also met a Seattle couple, Lois and Geary Long, who had a similar opinion. ‘She's so beautiful and so solidly built,’ Lois was quoted as saying of “Raven”, their 2008 59-footer. The intrepid cruisers stopped in Roche Harbor on their way to Alaska for the fourth year in a row. They plan to fish for halibut and crab off the Sawyer Glacier and take advantage of the boat's long range: ‘She has a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 7 knots,’ says Lois.
Finally, Joel and Meme Messing, owners of the Selene 40 ‘Messing Around’, explained that they had wanted a Selene for some time (they had a twin-engined boat and a smaller one in their fleet) but had missed out on second-hand boats. Desperate, they turned to Craigslist, where Joel spotted one for sale. He flew to Washington from Canada. ‘We quickly sold the small one and the big one and bought a medium one with a single engine,’ says Joel. That's also how the Crucils became attracted to the brand. After seeing a few models come through their home port of Ladysmith, they tried to buy one second-hand. When that deal fell through, they opted for a new build to take advantage of Selene's almost entirely bespoke approach, choosing the 60 Ocean Explorer.
These testimonies were collected by Jeff MOSER, editor of Passagemaker, who was present at the rally. We have translated and extracted them from his account.
